Revolutionizing Internet Registry Data Access

FullCtl Receives ARIN Grant for Open Source RegCtl & PrefixCtl Development

In its fifth year, the ARIN Community Grant Program continues to be a catalyst for positive change in the Internet community within the ARIN region. FullCtl is proud to announce that it has been selected as a recipient of the 2023 ARIN Community Grant, receiving a grant amount of $20,000!

This significant grant will propel our ambitious project focused on standardizing and enhancing Internet registry data access!

The Challenge: Unstandardized Registration Data

One of the critical challenges facing the Internet industry is the lack of standardized registration data across different Regional Internet Registries (RIRs). Each RIR operates with its own data schema, leading to inconsistencies and inefficiencies. Moreover, changes made at one RIR can have cascading effects without any mechanism to buffer these changes. Our project aims to address these challenges comprehensively.

Project Overview: RegCtl & PrefixCtl

The project involves the development of two innovative tools: “RegCtl” and “PrefixCtl.” The first tool, RegCtl, is designed to normalize registration data to a global standard. The second tool, PrefixCtl, complements RegCtl by adding contextual information from Whois, the Internet Routing Registry (IRR), and live routing data. Together, these tools will offer a fully open-sourced solution for standardized and contextualized Registry Data Access Protocol (RDAP) and Route Origin Authorization (ROA) information management, reliably and on a global scale.

Project Objectives

The primary objectives of this project include the completion of the development of RegCtl and PrefixCtl. By achieving these milestones, FullCtl aims to revolutionize how registration data is handled within the Internet community. The open-sourced nature of both tools emphasizes our commitment to fostering collaboration and transparency within the industry.

Alignment with ARIN’s Mission

Of course, our project aligns seamlessly with ARIN’s mission, focusing on Internet technical improvements that promote the expansion, development, and growth of the Internet infrastructure. By standardizing registration data with RegCtl and enhancing the context available through PrefixCtl, this initiative contributes to the global consistency and usability of the Internet Number Registry System.

Evaluation Criteria and Community Impact

The project was evaluated based on ARIN’s selection criteria, ensuring alignment with eligibility guidelines, relevance, reach, impact, budget considerations, and likelihood of success. ARIN’s selection of our proposal indicates that we have a clear understanding of the criteria, with well-defined objectives, a strategic approach to problem-solving, and a realistic timeline for completion.

We’d like to thank the 2023 Grant Selection Committee for their careful consideration: • Joe Westover, ARIN staff, Committee Chair • Michael Abejuela, ARIN staff • Steven Feldman, ARIN General Member • Peter Harrison, ARIN Board of Trustees • Kat Hunter, ARIN Advisory Council • Roman Tatarnikov, ARIN General Member

Bottom Line

FullCtl is honored to be among the distinguished recipients of the 2023 ARIN Community Grant. The support from ARIN will play a pivotal role in bringing RegCtl and PrefixCtl to fruition, ushering in a new era of standardized and contextualized registry data access. As we progress with this project, a positive and far-reaching impact on the Internet community within the ARIN region is anticipated. The open-sourced tools will not only benefit the immediate users but also contribute to the broader goals of advancing Internet research, technology, and governance.

Together, ARIN and FullCtl are driving innovation and positive change, shaping the future of the Internet for the better.
